Igbo Slang and Exclamations to Add to Your Daily Vocabulary

This month, we’re exploring popular Igbo slang and exclamations you can use in everyday conversation. Slang is a collection of informal words, expressions, and phrases used by specific groups of people within a particular culture or region. Using Igbo slang and exclamations can help you connect with other Igbo speakers and make conversations more engaging.
Interestingly, some Igbo expressions mirror common phrases found in African American Vernacular English (AAVE), such as “clock it,” “period,” and “no cap.” Others reflect similar phrases in Nigerian Pidgin English, such as “Na wa o!”, offering a meaningful way to connect the languages.
Below are Igbo expressions you can use in place of common English expressions you may already use in your everyday vocabulary.
